What a great evening tonight! Julia was the Toastmaster of the evening and set sunshine as the theme. We heard many interesting responses to “What comes to your mind when you think of sunshine?” including happiness, Pimms, sunchairs and picnics. Julia led us competently through an evening of lots of energy!
We had 4 prepared speeches, 2 from the Competent Communicator (CC) manual, the initial manual on the communication track, and 2 advanced speeches.
In her icebreaker speech “jump in with both feet” Luana told us about growing up on a farm in Brazil, shaving her head and coming to London without a word of English, which resulted in her losing her job at a food chain within a day! Well done for introducing yourself so well Luana, we look forward to hearing more from you!
In her speech “great ideas: but what about making them happen?” Barbora talked about the millennial generation and told us three inspiring stories about three of her friends and how they live up their dreams! Let’s get started to think about what we really want, it’s never too late!
I (Nadine) came next, with speech #1 from the Speaking to Inform Manual. In the speech “Social Mobility Foundation” Nadine told us about a charity that works on practical improvements to social mobility, which she has been volunteering for several years.
Aileen talked about the “Courage to shine” in her second speech from the Speciality Speeches manual, and how we should find ideas, redefine success and make connections. Aileen finished with a thought provoking quote from Marianne Williamson’s A Return to Love: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. “
Our evaluators were Sayara, Katri, Anqi, Carrie and Helen. Thank you also to our grammarian Becky and the word of the day inception, and to our timekeeper Anne K. Both Becky and Anne performed their first ever role at our Club, so well done ladies!
Zhenzehn was our Table Topic master and lead us through a great impromptu speaking session on housing related topics. We had to respond to why living in a certain locations was just what we always dreamt of, and imagine the creativity when locations included the middle of a highway, in a shopping centre, next to a nuclear power plant or in the sewage.
Best speaker was awarded to Barbora, best evaluator went jointly to Sayara and Carrie and best Table Topics Speaker went to Carrie. Many congratulations to all!
We also had two visitors, Benta and Yinan. We hope you enjoyed your visit and we hope to welcome you again soon! Just sign up here, at least 2 days in advance and stop by again! http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/toastmasters-wibf-speakers-city-tickets-18859303685
